In the short story , “Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown” written by Anne Jew, the narrator, Lin is divided between west and east culture due to lose interest in Chinese History, the incompatible of her surroundings’ ideas and her parents’ imprisoned thought. To begin with, Lin is less interesting with the Chinese Culture, by saying that “I wonder if that makes this thirteen months long or if one month is left out to fit into the regular calendar. But I don’t ask” (Jew 1). While Lin’s father explains why the temperature hasn’t change until August by answering with Chinese traditional calendar. Lin is misunderstand and dose not ask because she thinks the explanation is boring. This can be comprehended that the History is not attractive to Lin, so Lin can not blend in the culture. In addition, there are two cultures around Lin and she can not balance the ambiguity of these two. When Lin misapprehended to China town’s people’s action, she decides to play with foreigners instead of homogeneous. “I started to play with friends who weren’t loud and who weren’t Chinese. This upset my mother” (Jew 4). Her mother feels uncomfortable to her decision, because she wants Lin to keep the significant characteristics of Chinese. However, Lin is educated in a environment of western culture. Thus, this makes Lin irresolute when she meets the two cultures. Lastly, after Lin’s parents found out she is dating with a white boy, Todd. They feels frustrated due to the limitation of their narrow perspective of Chinese traditional notion. “ ‘How can you be so fearless? Going out with a white boy! ’ ”(Jew 5). Lin is fall in love with Todd, so they should not be opposed. However, Lin’s parents reject it because of Todd’s skin color. In the older generation, people think people can only be married with same race people, but in Canada, a multi-cultural country. There are various of races and lives together, which caused Lin be lost in accepting different cultures. Consequently, Lin’s vast and hazy is caused by her parents’ narrow thought. Overall, the reasons of Lin being detached from her culture are, the less attractive of Chinese history to Lin, the shock of two cultures for Lin and Lin’s parents’ narrow thoughts.
