In the short story “Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown” by Anne Jew, Lin separates from Chinese culture because she is disinterested in what her father said , her mother forces Lin to choose Chinese culture, and other Chinese judge other people's affairs at will. To begin with, she is disinterested in what her father said “ He would launch into a long, boring explanation of the history of the Chinese calendar and say it was superior to the Western calendar. If it was anyone else, I would probably ask”(Jew,1). This quotation reveals that Lin is sweetheart from her father. Actually, Lin is interested in Chinese culture, but no one talks about Chinese culture to her, so Lin chose a Canadian culture with easier exposure. In addition her mother forces Lin to choose Chinese culture. After her mother found out she is dating white boys”’How can you be so fearless? Going out with a white boy!’ screams my mother”(Jew,5) Lin's mother forced her to choose Chinese culture, because in old Chinese culture, Chinese people could not associate with westerners, so her mother forced her to not associate with white boys. However, this practice makes Lin, who is in the rebellious period, more want to choose western culture, so she chooses to break away from Chinese culture. Finally, other Chinese judge other people's affairs at will. It cause her to separate from Chinese culture. When Lin goes to China town, “Sometimes they would comment on me, looking at me as if I couldn’t see or hear them ”(Jew, 2).When Chinese talk about others, they ignore their feelings, Such behavior of Chinese people conflicts with western culture, so such behavior leads to the reason why Lin stays away from Chinese culture. In conclusion, there are three aspects that have caused Lin to break away from Chinese culture, including her father, mother, and many more other Chinese.
